Principle
Otoplasty is an aesthetic surgical operation that corrects anomalies in the cartilage of the auricles. These anomalies are what cause “protruding” ears. An incision is made in the natural fold behind the ear, the skin is then pulled back to provide access to the cartilage so that its shape can be restructured. The ears are then pulled in towards the head, preserving their symmetry and natural appearance. The operation can be performed on one or both ears, ages 7 years and older for children. For the sutures, absorbable stitches are often used. If not, they will need to be removed on the 10th day after the aesthetic procedure.

Results
It will take a month or two – the time the tissues need to regain their suppleness and for the swelling to go down – before the results of otoplasty can be fully appreciated. The ears are beautified: their position is balanced and symmetrical, and the shapes are harmonious and natural.

Possible side effects
After the aesthetic procedure, the ears may be swollen, with their relief masked by oedema; bruising may also appear.
